JoinRooms Guide

Using JoinRooms on iPhone, Android, and desktop

JoinRooms runs in the browser, so the same Room can be reached from phones, tablets, and computers without installing a native app.

Start in a modern browser

Open joinrooms.us in a current browser on an iPhone, Android device, tablet, Windows PC, Mac, Chromebook, or Linux computer. Choose Create, Join, or Sign In according to what you are trying to do. An invitation can take a participant directly to the shorter entry flow for its Room.

JoinRooms is browser-based. It is not represented as a native app-store application, and exact behavior can vary by browser version, operating system, device policy, and available hardware.

On iPhone and iPad

JoinRooms can be used directly in the browser. On supported versions, the browser's sharing or page menu may provide Add to Home Screen so JoinRooms opens from an icon in a more app-like window. The exact menu name and placement can change with the browser and iOS or iPadOS version.

Keep the browser current and allow only the permissions you intend to use. If an installed shortcut appears out of date after a deployment, close and reopen it or refresh the page.

On Android

Use a modern Android browser to open the site. Supporting browsers may show an install prompt or an Install app or Add to Home screen option in the menu. An installed PWA still uses browser capabilities rather than becoming a separate native JoinRooms application.

Battery-saving and background-management rules differ among Android devices. Returning from another app may restore the current Room, show a covered screen, or request the Room information again depending on the Room settings and retained browser state.

On desktop and laptop computers

JoinRooms works in a normal browser tab. Supporting desktop browsers may offer an install icon or menu command that opens it in a dedicated app-like window. A larger display can make the participants panel, owner settings, Theater, or Music easier to use, but the underlying Room remains the same.

Notifications, camera selection, device unlock, and media playback are controlled partly by the browser and operating system. A feature available in one browser may have a different prompt or may be unavailable in another.

Opening an invitation

Tap or click the invitation on the device you want to use. A valid invite identifies its Room, so an invited participant should not need the full Create, Join, or owner Sign In form. Choose the requested nickname and enter or knock according to the Room's current admission setting.

Treat the link as Room access information. If it opens in an in-app browser with limited capabilities, use that browser's option to open the page in the device's main browser.

Camera and photo selection

Persistent Room plans can allow photos when the owner enables them. The photo control opens the browser or device picker, which may offer the camera, photo library, or file selection depending on the platform. Normal Temporary Rooms do not provide photo sharing.

Unsupported, oversized, or safety-blocked images may be rejected. Wait for the send result before closing the picker or leaving the page. JoinRooms does not promise identical camera controls on every device.

Returning after sleep, refresh, or backgrounding

JoinRooms attempts to restore a valid Room session after a short connection loss, refresh, sleep, or background transition. Restoration depends on the Room still existing and the browser retaining valid continuity information. Cleared browser data, changed credentials, an ended Room, or device restrictions can require a fresh entry.

Private Room and Room Plus participants may choose Discretion Settings that intentionally cover the screen when JoinRooms leaves the foreground. That covered view is different from being disconnected.
