Privacy and Room access

Room access is designed for small groups, but every invitation and credential should still be shared thoughtfully.

Listed and unlisted Rooms

Rooms are unlisted by default. An eligible Reserved Room owner can choose to publish a listing in Find Rooms. A listing may show summary information used to identify the Room; it does not publish Room messages.

Unlisted means the Room stays out of Find Rooms. It does not make access impossible for someone who has valid Room information.

Ways a Room may control entry

  • Password: participants enter the Room password.
  • Open: supported Reserved Rooms can allow direct entry.
  • Knock: a visitor waits for an eligible person inside to approve the request.

Room owners and authorized moderators can manage access, remove participants, or block someone from returning to that Room within the role hierarchy.

Room password and Owner PIN

A Room password is participant access information. An Owner PIN grants owner access and should remain private. A nickname is simply how a participant appears inside the Room.

Encrypted room messaging

JoinRooms encrypts room messages in the browser before relaying them. Protect Room passwords and invite links. This does not guarantee complete anonymity, absolute confidentiality, or protection from misuse.

Share access thoughtfully

  • Send invitations only to people you intend to invite.
  • Assume a link or password can be forwarded.
  • Keep the Owner PIN separate from participant access details.
  • Use knock entry when the Room needs approval at the door.
  • Remove or ban unwanted participants and change access information when appropriate.
