How Discretion Settings work

Discretion Settings help control what appears on one device when someone steps away, changes apps, or receives a Room notification.

Who receives Discretion Settings

The full Discretion Settings presets are included with Private Room and Room Plus. Other Rooms can still provide the manual Cover Screen action when the current Room supports password verification, but they do not receive the plan-specific automatic presets.

These choices apply to the particular Room and device. Changing them on one browser does not promise to reconfigure every other device.

Cover Screen

Cover Screen hides the conversation on the current device. The covered view does not change Room admission, disconnect other participants, or end the Room. To reveal the conversation again, use the Room password or an available enrolled Quick Unlock method.

Manual Cover Screen remains distinct from leaving. It is useful when someone wants to keep the Room connected while preventing the conversation from remaining visible on the display.

Private, Maximum, and Custom presets

Off
Uses normal Room behavior. Manual Cover Screen remains available.
Private
Covers the screen when JoinRooms leaves the foreground and keeps notifications generic.
Maximum
Covers the screen when JoinRooms leaves the foreground and disables notifications from that Room on that device.
Custom
Lets the participant choose foreground-leave covering, an inactivity period, and generic or disabled notifications.

Background and inactivity behavior

When automatic covering is enabled, JoinRooms can cover the Room when the page or app leaves the foreground. Custom settings can also cover after 1, 5, or 15 minutes without interaction. Browser and operating-system lifecycle behavior can vary, so these controls should be treated as practical screen-discretion tools rather than a guarantee that no content can ever be observed.

JoinRooms may distinguish an intentional system picker, such as choosing a photo, from simply leaving the page so the picker can finish without an unexpected cover. Normal configured behavior resumes after control returns.

Notification choices

Generic allows a limited Room alert without using detailed conversation text. None stops that Room from sending notifications to that device. Notification delivery still depends on browser support, device permission, and a valid notification subscription.

Quick Unlock

Quick Unlock is an optional convenience for returning to a covered Room on an eligible browser and device. After enrollment, it asks the browser or operating system to verify the device user with an available method such as Face ID, fingerprint, Windows Hello, or a device passcode.

JoinRooms receives the cryptographic result needed to verify the credential; it does not receive or store the person's fingerprint, face scan, or device passcode. Browser support and the confirmation screens shown to the user vary. The Room password remains the fallback.

Require Knock is in Settings

Require Knock is a Room-level admission action in Settings. When enabled, new visitors wait for approval from an eligible person inside. It does not cover anyone's screen, and Cover Screen does not require visitors to knock.
